A state-of-the-art Museum of Modern Art building is under construction in the vicinity of the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw. Although it is one of the most anticipated investments of recent years, it is causing a lot of controversy.
The building of the new headquarters of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw was designed by American architect Thomas Phifer. It will be a unique place on the cultural map of the Polish capital. It will completely transform the empty space in front of the Palace of Culture and Science. It is located between the Swietokrzyski Park and the Youth Palace, in the northeastern part of the Defilad Square. It has 4 floors and 20,000 square meters, and will serve cultural and social activities.
The first floor of the Museum of Modern Art building is planned to include auditoriums, a temporary exhibition gallery, educational and lecture spaces, as well as a café and store. The entire building consists of four above-ground floors and two underground floors. In addition to space for exhibitions, it will house a cinema, a conservation studio, educational rooms, a bookstore, and art warehouses. The geometric staircase is one of the assets of the new Museum of Modern Art building. Rooms with panoramic windows will also add to the character of the whole building.
Although the building evokes extreme feelings in Warsaw residents, city architects and urban planners point out that its simplicity fits perfectly into the space of the center of Poland’s capital.
The minimalist body made of white architectural concrete resembles a monolith and refers to the tradition of modernism. It also gives it lightness, as the right shapes make it seem as if the building is floating in the air.
Construction work on the new Museum of Modern Art building is scheduled to be completed in the second half of this year. Preparations for the opening exhibition are currently underway, and the first guests will visit the new headquarters of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw as early as 2024.
